Gypsy Culture – back on the road? Print E-mail

Gypsy Culture – back on the road? It is 40 years since the 1968 Caravan Sites Act forced local authorities in the UK to provide sites for Gypsies and Travellers. How has this social experiment worked in practice? PPL’s Pictures of Yesteryear Archive holds a unique 4-year photo essay of Romany life

taken by Surrey based photographer Tony Boxall between 1964 and '68.  Boxall followed the Vincent family of Gypsies as they moved in horse-drawn caravans around Surrey, Sussex and Kent until forced by circumstance and the Eric Lubbuck MP sponsored Bill to take up Council accommodation

40 years on, we have tracked down the Vincent family again to find that they have shunned the settled life. The children in these pictures, now with families of their own, are back on the road, moving around the North London and Essex suburbs, and fighting just as hard as their parents did for freedom to maintain their Romany culture and lifestyle. PPL's archive of historic images covers life and times from the late 1800s. Our Pictures of Yesteryear on-line Archive includes the famous pictures by Sussex photographer Walter Gardiner, motoring specialist CK Bower, Tony Boxall's Gipsy and Romany pictures, as well as those of sailing pioneers like Francis Chichester, Robin Knox-Johnston, Chay Blyth and Joshua Slocum.

We also have a fast growing archive of traditional crafts and industry that include a large collection of early inland waterway pictures, together with a collection of fine art illustrations and engravings. The pictures are available as sepia or black and white prints to decorate homes and themed pubs, restaurants and hotels, as well as high resolution digital files for use in editorial and advertising features.
Reproduction quality digital files are available from previews to cover and double page spreads. Larger files or transparencies are available on request.
