Eileen Ramsay Photo Archive saved for the Nation Print E-mail

The work of Eileen Ramsay, the Queen of yachting photography from the early 1950s to 1970s, has been saved for posterity. 

This famous sailing archive, which records the explosion in dinghy, small boat sailing and powerboating in Britain after World War II, also includes historic pictures of sailing pioneers from the first Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Races (OSTAR) and the solo voyages of Francis Chichester, Alec Rose and Eric Tabarly.

The pictures are available for reproduction and as display prints.

It has taken 9 court cases and 250,000 man-hours were expended building two of the most technically advanced race yachts in history. In the end, it took little more than four and a half hours of racing for Oracle software billionaire Larry Ellison, skipper James Spittall, team boss Sir Russell Coutts, tactician John Kostecki and the rest of their BMW Oracle crew to wrest the 159 year old trophy from the Swiss hands of Ernesto Bertarelli and his Alinghi crew with a 2-0 victory.
